MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE BRIEF:
From reading the brief I can see that we have been asked to produce a radio station for students at The Henley College.
The brief states that this is "a real Henley College venture, and we will take the best ideas to help build a radio station for both the college and its students". This shows that this is not just a task for the course, but a task that will effectively effect the whole college. The college has intentions to produce a broadcasting, journalism and production hub in the hope that it brings the college and the community closer together, whilst giving students the real media industry experience. It is vitally important that we all work very hard on this unit and make something that the college, the students and the creative media department can be proud of.
The brief has said that we will be working in small production groups within our class to create a concept that would meet our students wants and needs. As well as this we will be producing features which will give an insight into what our radio stations will feature. Within our production groups it is important we all cooperate, communicate and work well together as a team. Without cooperation and communication, work could get confusing and someone may end up doing more than everyone else. We will probably have a group leader to ensure that everyone has an equal workload and everyone is completing work on time.

I think the best type of radio for our college radio station would be internet radio or podcasts. I think having an internet radio station will be good as it could be accessed by everyone. The college could put a shortcut to the college radio website on all the college computers so that students and teachers can access it easily. I also think podcasts would be good as students could come in groups to do a radio show . Then they and their friends can download it and listen to it when they want to, instead of having to stop what they are doing to listen live (which could interrupt lessons) or they could miss it altogether which could be disappointing.
If we are going to play music on our radio station, we will need to talk to three bodies that are in charge of music copyright/royalties and we must buy a licence.
- PRS (Performing Right Society). PRS represents artists and composers. PRS collects royalties from radio stations, TV shows and organisations that play music online.
- PPL ( Phonographic Performance LTD) . PPL collects royalties on the behalf of record companies from radio stations that play music.
- MCPS (Mechanical Copyright Protection Society). MCPS collects royalties from radio stations that reproduce songs for the use in backing music promos and advertisements. A lot of if comes from MCPS library music.
- Most UK radio stations that play music have a 'Blanket license. This allows them to play whatever music they wish in return for an annual fee. The fee is based on audio size and revenue. However, radio stations are required to undertake 'sample days' to help apportion fees to artists and music composers.
