Weasel Words: |
Magic Ingredients: |
Weasel Words are used to make people think that paying for a certain product/service will give them something positive. Although, the companies that make these adverts word it in a clever way to stop them getting sued. They use weasel words which say that something might make a positive effect but there is no guarantee.
|
Companies such as pharmaceutical manufacturers claim to make 'special' tablets from discoveries they have made, which are better than tablets made by competitors. These differences may be quite big, but more often than not they are only very slight differences. However big the difference is, people are still entice people into believing that it is better.
|
Patriotism: |
Transfer: |
Patriotism is used to make customers think that buying a certain product will prove that they are proud of their country. For example, people may drink Guinness to prove their love for Ireland and to make them seem and feel more Irish, even if they're not.
|
Transfer uses positive words, images and ideas to suggest that the product/service that is being advertised is also positive.
|
Plain Folks: |
Snob Appeal: |
The use of 'Plain Folks' is to suggest that the product/service that is being advertised is something that not just rich or famous people use, ordinary 'plain folk' people can use it too. Companies such as Rice Krispies use ordinary families to suggest that the cereal that is being adverted can be eaten by anybody.
|
Snob appeal means that the purpose of the advert is to make the product/service seem special and if the customer was to buy it they would become part of an elite group with a luxurious and glamorous lifestyle.
|
Bribery: |
Bandwagon: |
Bribery is used to make you buy something for the sake of a deal. E.g. "buy one get one free".
|
The technique of bandwagon is used to make people want to buy something so they aren't left out. Advertisers claim that 'everyone's got it' so you have to too!

The first thing I did with this image in Photoshop express is increase the contrast of the image. A high contrast image has bright highlights and dark shadows. The colours are bold and the image just stands out more. I think this has made the photo look quite effective as the background looks more grungy and brings down the mood of the photo.
Next, I increased the clarity of the photograph. This made the lines in the image a lot sharper and more defined. This does not effect the impact of the campaign image but it makes the photo look better.
|
The second thing I did whilst editing this image was decrease the vibrancy. This makes the colours stand out less. Her skin tone has been lightened slightly, and the darker parts looks a lot darker. This makes the image look quite depressing.
In this next step I used the 'increase shadows' tool. However, I don't see any difference in shadows apart from the image has gained a bluey overlay effect.
|
The next thing I did on Photoshop express was decrease the temperature. This as lightened the girl's skin further and made her surroundings look cold and depressing; which I think is very effective.
This is the final edited image from photoshop express.

Using the 'Gimp' software I downloaded, I decided to edit the image from Photoshop express further by adding bruising effects. To create this illusion of bruising I used the airbrush tool. I used colours such as red, purple and blue to give it a bruise effect and a bit of blood. I think it is a bit over edited but it makes the image quite powerful.
|
And again. here is the final photo. To add the words in I used 'Paint'. This is quite a simple process of adding text boxes and typing in words. I did the slogan with a shadow behind it to make it stand out more.
